Following up. In my opinion, you aren’t missing much. Set in WWI, the German soldiers act like Nazis who don’t exist yet. Early in the book, a group splits into two, and all urgency to reunite vanishes. It describes a prison camp for the most notorious enemies, yet two of the five prisoners, when their backstories are filled out, were actually noncombatants in the war.
I am about to bail at the 50% point because what little suspense is developing is overshadowed by typecast characters.
