I have tested the plugin using both x11 and wayland it works in both.
The commands open new terminals which is good.
Do you have
workspaces enabled on your system? If you do then your system could be opening the terminal for the plugin on a off screen workspace.

Side question: Will the Auto-updater plugin show up in the plugin browser of Calibre? I have searched for it each time I've installed the updates, but I haven't seen in in the plugin browser itself. I've had to install from the file in this thread.
