I think it is a great idea, in fact I have contracted with a few companies to add some ads to the classics. Here is a preview.

"It was the best of times for a refreshing Coca Cola, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom courtesy of Harvard University, it was the age of foolishness brought to you by Comedy Central; it was the epoch of belief thanks to the blessed members of the First Baptist Church of New York, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light brought to us by Minnesota Power and Light, it was the season of Darkness thanks to high quality window blinds currently 50% off at the Home Depot; it was the spring of hope with spring like freshness that only Tide detergent can bring, it was the winter of despair but not for long with Prozac; we had everything before us because we invested wisely with E.F Hutton, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven (also courtesy of the First Baptist Church of New York), we were all going the other way thanks to turn by turn directions with our Tom Tom Go GPS navigator."

I do not think it takes away from the story at all.
