I'm late to reply, but in case it's helpful:
For A, I do see value to per device options, but if others don't I do think having it as optional makes sense. I normally read one book on my phone for when that's the only device I have and read mostly on an iPad mini. I don't tend to read the same book on both devices, mostly because I found syncing in Apple Books to be only so-so and it was easier to keep books to a single device.
For B, no strong opinion
For C, for me this is critical. I read in both the light and in the dark (when my spouse is sleeping for example). In the light I prefer white background. In the dark I have to use a dark background. Many ways of handling it. For me, Apple Books detecting the ambient light and changing it is great, but maybe difficult. The ability to quickly switch the color scheme would also work. Good luck working through that.
For D, no opinion.
