Technically, yes? I think the DRM on KF8 is versioned, so they could make a new derivation method and "patch" the firmware to use that as fallback. Practically, unlikely since modifying KF8 is somewhat more involved than KFX, and it is mostly obsolete to them, but then again, what do I know? They consistently do something I did not expect.

Oddly enough, it seems like Epubor did something by themselves for a change, and started to support K4Mac with SIP disabled. When SIP is off, process memory can be accessed and hence, either the key or book itself extracted. So it is feasible, but I do not know how true it is, obviously.
