Ovservations on Kobo Aura N514
Thank you all for the work on the kobo!
I am just experimenting with kobopatch for a old Kobo Aura N514.
# Serial cable
I have hooked up a 3v3 TTL serial cable to the PCB, for using pyserial-miniterm /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 --raw in order to gain root access on the device.
I notice that the serial communication is inhibited after some kill commands apparently inside the nickel process. If the device is in sleep mode then it is fine, otherwise I needed to "killall nickel" in order to use serial because after a few second the communication would drop, touching the home icon would re-enable the serial for a few seconds...
# System reset to manufacturing defaults.
So I thought it maybe good to clean out old setting that where form 11 years ago, so I did an factory reset. =>
Bad decision, the device now needs a full online tethering cycle to the kobo site before it is usable. Luckily I could restore the old contents of /mnt/onboard/ in order to bring it back..
So I am now on unpatched kobo-update-4.38.23555.zip with root access via serial.
i have not yet used the device full and I am just starting to gain some experience with the Kobo, obviously I would like to detach from online services interfering with the use of this device as much as possible:
Would it be wise to install kobopatch_4.38.23171.zip with the 4.38.23171 firmware?
Many thanks, kind regards,
hve
