4,096 colors provide significantly more information than 16 shades of gray; moreover, the reduced resolution is barely noticeable from a normal viewing distance, and the reduction in brightness caused by the filters can be compensated for by the front light.
For example, Osmand+ (maps) is hardly usable in grayscale, whereas Kaleido3 is perfectly usable.
