Fixed it.
Installed the app and didn't change the location of the Library. The app opened fine after initial setup. Changed the book library to a new location and the app stalled as previously. Forced quit Calibre. Opened calibre again and it just worked. I do have a big (50Gb +) book library on an external drive - maybe that was it.
