Is there a technical reason why periods are the only delimiter for hierchecial tags?

For example, if I want to set Animals/Horses instead of Animals.Horses there's no option to set '/' as a splitter, or some other arbitrary character.

Is it impossible/impractical to implement that, or just "always worked that way and nobody asked otherwise"?
