It worked perfectly this time.
My ignoramus guess is that having books and/or bookmarks confused the poor thing the first time.

To future readers: A hard reset is no big deal if you've backed up your books and aren't too worried about your bookmarks (although there's probably a way of getting them back too). The bit in the wiki about having to connect to your computer and going to the sony store (especially worrying if in UK without access to sony store) is unnecessary (unless, I guess, you are using DRM stuff).
