I've been using Smart Audiobook Player for Android. Has a free version, but I paid the $2.99 one-time charge to unlock some extra features. Handles containers with internal chapters and always remembers your reading position. Has bookmarking and a sleep timer. Can do various types of cloud syncing, but I've no use for that. Easy to set up the library folder. I transfer books from the PC to the phone's library folder over WiFi with an FTP client. After transfers you rescan the library to add the new books to Smart Audiobook Player's database.
Foobar2000 in Windows. Infinitely configurable; I've set the interface up with thirty separate numbered playlists across the top bar, a bookmark plugin, and the scheduler plugin for a sleep timer. I've been happy with it, but yeah, lotsa configuring with this beast!
Looks like you folks have some helpful suggestions for audiobook apps I've never heard of that are definitely worth a try.
