People trying to get off the Kindle hardware may want to consider an Android tablet that runs the Kindle app, such as the e-ink Boox Go 7.
They have three kinds: color, b&w with glass screen, b&w with plastic screen. The first two have black bezels, third has a white bezel. I recently got the color one and am pleased with it so far.
I was going to buy a b&w, but decided to try the color, and it's not too bad for reading if you crank up the sidelight a bit - unlit the background is definitely darker. There are a few review videos, and some write-ups, they're easy to find.
