New Kindle 4 NT project

Hello all,

This is my first post, and first time with one of these devices so parts of this are probably going to sound pretty stupid. Apologies in advance. Either way, I just recently got a Kindle 4 NT, and have been wanting to mess around with it. Best case scenario I think it would be cool to have the full Linux OS exposed and run a small launcher with a PDF viewer, Lynx (map the back and forth buttons to the arrow keys for navigation), and perhaps some other stuff, but those two are my main priority. I understand there seems to have been some way to chroot Debian on these at one point? That would be perfect, but that method seems outdated. I also understand there's a way to run Alpine but that doesn't seem to be supported for this model. I'm aware KUAL exists, but I'm not sure what applications that runs (actual Linux binaries or something else) or where to get them. Doesn't seem as low-level into the system as I might like just as far as the fun of tinkering goes.

I'm on firmware 4.1.4, so it seems like most options should be available. I'm also planing on exposing the hardware serial port. Any tips on what's available to me, or what precisely I should be looking for?

Many thanks
