Over time I've found that you're right about this. That cache needs to be kept clear to keep the viewer and editor snappy. I eventually got tired of clearing it manually, got off my lazy butt and took your suggestion; I've needed to implement some sort of daily cleanup for ages. Takes me forever to get around to things.
Agree on the stats plugins and data collection. Got no use for that either.
I also tend to open books from Explorer with Calibre's viewer as default, and don't make use of "use viewer for..." in prefs. I had things set that way from the beginning because Calibre viewer is my only (non-phone) reading app, so I don't know if it helped with speeding things up or not.
