I'm sorry I didn't specify this sooner, as I should have. My only excuse is old age
In the comments box of the edit metadata screen are the two buttons that I used most often, the select all and remove formatting button, both circled in red on the attachment. The remove formatting is the one that has changed behavior and not working as it used to.
The clean comments plugins can't be used inside the edit metadata screen as far as I know. I do use them when I'm on the main book list.
When I'm checking a batch of books that I've just added I don't like going in and out of edit metadata, for workflow sake. Just clicking on the select all, then remove formatting was simple and fast. Then onto the next book to verify and fix if necessary.
