Calibre rightly does not mess with user data. If it is wrong, you can click "edit metadata" for the book, and fix the author sort with one click on the arrow next to the name, no typing required.
That does automatically what Calibre knows about. Which may not match what you want for "van Vogt" or "da Silva" or names with Jr/Filho/etc appended, and many other cases. Although it does know about "Jr." and "(ed.)", and even "Jr. (ed.)"
