The stock Android TTS is free, and part of the add-on accessibility pack*. I think it has to be legally free in EU. It works quite well in PocketBook app free editiom, which also can wirelessly connect to Calibre Content Server.. Some apps only read a page at a time. Pocketbook has controls in its own GUI.

Many 3rd party TTS (even paid ones) are simply packaging up the Google system TTS, a perfectly legal scam on the Playstore.

I had also an English TTS from Huawei on maybe Android 7 that was better.

[*Via Playstore. IMO basic Android components shouldn't need a Google account, or Playstore. The Playstore is only accessible with a Google account and minimum may now be Android 6 for reliable access. Phone features and many apps still work if you later delete the Google Account. Some won't such as Google Books. Kindle app sends stuff to Amazon at boot and every wake, even if you don't use the App. So I've deleted it on everything]
