Thank you for these replies and tips about ProcessExplorer and TCPview.

Downloaded ProcessExplorer yesterday, but on running it found that the wireless device driver in calibre had started correctly of its own accord.

This morning too the wireless device driver has launched as normal without error or need for intervention.

So, tentatively, the problem seems to have righted itself.

Hope the error doesn't occur again, but if it does I'll first use ProcessExplorer or TCPview to try to glean insight about calibre processes that may still be running.
