Sometimes it happens to me too, in french 'calibre' can be translated literally as 'caliber' in english. Funny thing is depending as if I put a upper letter in front to make it as a name, some app preserve it durring the translation.

Only American English due to Webster. It's always calibre in UK & Ireland.
Webster seems to have hated anything with even an appearance of French, hence all the endings changed. He was not reflecting universal American usage.
