That column is used by calibre for managing spine widths in the bookshelf view. I suppose it could be modified by manipulating the database but the results would be overwritten anytime a recount was triggered.

You can select a different column for use instead of Pages. I used the #pages from the Count Pages plugin when doing some testing during the calibre 9 beta.
