To stop your iPhone from notifying you of the same text message twice, navigate to Settings > Notifications > Messages > Customize Notifications > Repeat Alerts and set it to "Never". This setting, often defaulted to "Once" (which repeats the alert after 2 minutes), is the most common cause of double notifications.
Mine only dings once now.....
