Amazon delivers different image quality based on the device/app and version used. In my case I downloaded the AZW3/AZW6 pair using a version of Kindle for PC with KFX format blocked in order to receive the best possible image quality available in those formats. The sizes I received are different from what you are seeing, 8 MB and 71 MB respectively.
The AZW3 matches the file I receive when downloading to a 4th generation Kindle. It contains a full set of low resolution color images.
The AZW6 has high resolution replacements for 58 of those images. They are almost as good as the images found in the EPUB download.
