Asimov even mentions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lest_Darkness_Fall as one of the bestest historical novel he did read.
L. Sprague de Camp has written some good (and funny) historical fiction.

My husband's introduction to L. Sprague de Camp was reading his non-fiction book _The Ancient Engineers_ for a history class. He was surprised to find out that the author of his favorite history text also wrote science fiction and fantasy.
