Have you tried charging it with the wall charger via USB when it is powered off? I see the red light come on when I do that to indicate that it is charging. I don't get the red light if I plug in the charger when the device is powered on.

Edit: I left my device to charge that way for a while, and it booted itself up at some point and stopped charging. Maybe it's not a good solution after all.
