I have thrice been to Phoenix in the winter and quite enjoyed it each time. But somehow it just seems unnatural to see so much humanity in such a dry environment. So when I drove my family across Arizona one summer in an old car (before useful emergency communications devices like cellphones), I white-knuckled it the entire way as I imagined something like a radiator failing followed by the discovery of four sun-baked corpses found along a deserted stretch of highway. Texas (and much of the western U.S.) isn't very different in that regard except by degree - about 20 F or so in mid-summer!
