Hi,
I got my hands on a Tolino Shine 5 with a broken display, which is otherwise completely fine. The Tolino Shine 5 uses the same hardware as the Kobo Clara BW, which I know to be repairable. In the past, I repaired my old Kobo Clara HD with a new display I got from aliexpress and it was really satisfying to repair such a device.
When I set to find a replacement display for the Shine5/ClaraBW, I immediately found the offer from
iFixit, but the price is pretty steep: 90€ to (probably) repair a device which I cant get new for 110€ or used for 80€ right now is just too much. I know repairing electronic devices is hardly ever economical, but even if its for the fun and satisfaction of doing it, that is hardly reasonable.
In my research I found that
the Shine 5 and Shine Color use the same firmware, just like
the Clara BW and the Clara Color. And I also found the
display of the Clara Color on aliexpress for a reasonable price.
So my question is: Do you think it is possible to use the display of a Kobo Clara Color to replace the broken one of a Tolino Shine 5? The connectors seem to be identical, the form factor too. The firmware is the same.
It would be both an upgrade and a downgrade, with gaining color but it not being the Carter 1300 any more. It would be an interesting project, but I don't want to spend the money, if any on of you maybe already know if it won't even work.
