I didn't see any vituperation. OTOH, I agree that using SQLite on a database on a network connected drive is an unnecessary risk. The creators of SQLite do not recommend it, the author of calibre does not recommend it and the users here have posted too often about running into issues with having their calibre library on a network connected drive.

As @BetterRed said, most of those message do include that the user has done this for years before bad things happened.
