Shopping for an Ereader and the ability to have my progress on titles (and ideally highlights as well) sync automatically across my devices is important to me.

I will be using my personal library which will not sync across kobo's servers so I'm trying to find a solution.

I know certain models like the Libra allow you to integrate third party cloud services (and you can use NM to put it on the others), but all the tutorials I've seen just demonstrate how to use them as file directories to pull epubs and pdfs from.

Do these files just get transferred to the local file system and stay there, or would any file on this drive have progress and annotations synced back to its cloud provider?
