Getting jumped or beaten up is pretty much par for the course where I hail from. Race is just an excuse for some of these idiots, if it wasn't race it would be the clothes you had on (I won't tell you about how many times I've been threatened on my way back from a club or the pub with broken bottles and knives or the friends I've seen hospitalised).
Piece of advice, if you're ever in England (especially smaller towns) avoid the pubs and clubs Friday and Saturday nights. It's like the Wild West
