It's possible, believe me and it has its upsides and downsides. Upside: the local Kebab shop still think I'm Turkish and give me a discount
Downside: I was attacked several times after the 7/11 tube bombings (eggs thrown at me, punched) and was regularly searched by armed officers at Liverpool Lime Street station going to work
My sister is quite British, although the tanning beds don't...well, the less said about that the better
