From bits and pieces gathered around the forums, this is what is working as I like:
1) Preferences > Tweaks > "Control formatting of title and series when used in templates": change it from "save_template_title_series_sorting = 'library_order' " to "save_template_title_series_sorting = 'strictly_alphabetic' "
2)
Code:
{author}{series:|/|}/{series_index:|| -} {pubdate} - {title}
I leave it here hoping it will help others!

It will eventually break and you can then easily loose track of some series. For example, The Wheel of Time series where the author died and Brandon Sanderson took over to finish the series. You would have the books for the original author in one directory and the books Sanderson wrote in another. But if you had them all under the series name, they would all be together.
So you create a directory called Series and all the series directories go there. Standalone and all books not in a series go there under the author's name.
