I know I'm late, but here's how I solved a similar issue.

First, I did what JSWolf suggested and installed a new SD card by following these instruction: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=209122
(I already had a firmware image so I skipped step 1 and the copy part of step 2)

After inserting it into my e-reader, it started up again. However, it got stuck in some sort of updating loop. I couldn't get past it, so after 3 loops I skipped the "Connect through WiFi" part of the process and instead plugged the e-reader into my PC.

I then downloaded and installed the Kobo desktop app on my PC and ran the e-reader setup/update process from there. After 5 or so minutes, I unplugged my e-reader, it restarted, and now it works again.
