If your ePub is a piece of crap, a conversion to mobi removes most ePub features and the conversion to ePub from mobi gives you an ePub that is about 2 steps from a pure text file.
For some people this is easier than actually fixing the ePub which does take some knowledge.
Oddly, the majority of the crap ePubs that I have been exposed to have come from illicit sites. For some reason, people seem to feel that any ePubs that they download for free are public domain so it is okay to send me a copy to take a look at. A bit strangely, 9 out of 10 ebooks that I've been sent have included a copyright page with many decades to go before the ebook would enter public domain.
