Screensaver stopped working?

I've been resetting my Kobo (Libra Color) several times trying to get KOReader running the way I want with Calibre.
One thing I've run into is the screensaver option in the original Kobo seems to no longer translate properly into KOReader.
On the original Kobo (I mean, not KOReader) I've added the screensaver directory and a bunch of .jpg's. When using the Kobo software, hitting the power button or closing the cover causes a random .jpg to take over the display.
But when using KOReader, I don't get the .jpg display. Instead there is an overlay on the last page read with a rectangular window that says "Sleeping" (with a circled i in front).
This all worked previously, although possibly I've got newer Kobo and KOReader software. I also lost the requirement to swipe or poke a button to fully wake. Now, as soon as the power button is pressed, or the cover opened, the "sleeping" message goes away and you're in the reader. I like the requirement to poke or swipe, as then I got to enjoy the cover art for as long as I liked.
All this is pretty trivial - its a screensaver after all - but it was fun and now I've managed to lose the feature.
The Kobo is on 4.42.23296 (5/30/2025), and KOReader is 202510 (I think, maybe 'ghost'?)
Any thoughts on how to debug this?
