Did you get your device working again?
The pinout of both mentioned chips is different, perhaps a software or hardware fault that's causing the need to reflash, corrupts os device settings resulting in initialization of a different model.
it also supports dfu, usb device id in dfu mode is 18d1:0d02, flashing without removing the sd card should be possible.
