It is possible, but not necessarily with an e-ink reader. As someone noted, Boox can probably do this but might require an extra app, PocketBook used to but now requires a root/jailbreak, and anything that can run the Koreader app should be able to.

That said, I use a tablet with a reading app instead, and the ability to download any book from Calibre whenever I want is really nice. I use MapleRead CE on an iPad, but you could also look for an Android app if that's preferred.

In my case, this was worth the switch because e-ink doesn't really save eye strain for me, and I can adjust the color and font and backlighting on Mapleread to something that is just as comfortable as e-ink (aka, e-ink and tablet both give me eye strain after a couple hours) so I decided to just simplify to using one device.
