As far as I understood, the direct “multi‑page → images” API exists only for PDF via page_images() in calibre.ebooks.metadata.pdf.
So this is the same functionality as select cover selection. And available only for PDF.
So I don't see a quick win for other formats.
But that said:
Current workflow - do conversion for PDF and generate previews will work and cover the need in a reliable fashion.
If there is a good proposition of how to do this without the implementation of a relatively slow conversion to PDF inside the plugin or introducing/supporting a dependency - I can consider doing it.
