I did write all this earlier:
We did have plot your own adventure paperbacks in early 1990s. They are older than that and worked just as you describe.
I have one left somewhere. Also I have Adventure 101 (1992 or 1992), Sony Data Discman ebook. It's actually a mini-CD in a caddy and exactly like the paper books. Except there is no bookmarks. You need to note where you are and search next time. At least you could put a bus ticket in the paperback.

They are all based off 1960s mainframe computer adventures.
