IMO, 7" is a compromise size and not a sweet spot at all, good only if you're going to read on only one device, as it's not ideal for (my own, of course) general use purposes. 8" is best for armchair reading, 6" is best for out-and-about and bed.
7" is too big for several of my purses and is harder to whip out on the spot even when it does fit; it's also bigger than I want to one-hand in bed. It's also not pocketable, at least not for my pockets. OTOH, I vastly prefer the bigger acreage of a 7.8" to 8" device when I'm sitting in my armchair; fewer page turns, more immersive reading.
I suspect most here are willing to run to more than one device, especially since they likely have older devices still in play. It's not as if they have to buy a new ereader wardrobe in one fell swoop.
