Our low-powered hero, Athelstan Digby, is an everyday person — a middle-aged bachelor, businessman, blanket manufacturer, alderman, art collector. He sometimes finds himself in unusual situations, and occasionally does some detective work, with varying degrees of success. The stories are light-hearted (and mostly “non-genre”), reflecting a sense of British wit and manners, with tea and a sense of sportsmanship playing a role.
William Fryer Harvey (1885 - 1937), known as W. F. Harvey, was an English writer of short stories, most notably in the macabre and horror genres. Among his best-known stories are “August Heat”(1910) and “The Beast with Five Fingers” (1919), described by horror historian Les Daniels as “minor masterpieces”. “Across the Moors” (1910) and “The Clock” (1928) are also frequently anthologized.
