I can copy for VLC since forever on Linux to an iPhone if it has VLC. But as I pointed out earlier, if it's an older iPhone that's been factory reset it won't have VLC. Only the stock player, and that can only see files loaded by iTunes or similar Apple SW (in my case on Win7 VM). VLC can't be installed if the phone no longer supported by Apple Store.

So you can't just copy to iThings, unless you either can add an app (ONLY via Store) or use approved Apple software. It's a walled garden.
