The statement was an exaggeration, but there was some truth behind it. The number of companies manufacturing disc players has shrunk and the number of units each produces has shrunk. Correspondingly, the number of plants the press discs has shrunk. And few brick-and-mortar stores sell them. So, no, discs are not dead, but they're on life support. I like physical media, so I'm hoping they can survive as a niche market.
