Perhaps you've hidden Preview in the Book editor and the Search bar in the GUI (Library manager) via the relevant keyboard shortcut toggles. The defaults are

Book editor->Preview: Alt+Shift+P (it's in the Windows group)
Library manager->Search bar: Alt+Shift+F (it's in the Main window layout group)
