A nearly unknown satiric fantasy by H. G. Wells, a comedy of manners with elements of the supernatural.
This whimsical tale involves a mermaid who comes ashore on the southern coast of England in 1899, ostensibly with the intention of joining genteel society but who really desires to seduce Harry Chatteris, a man she once encountered near Tonga
The story weaves together elements of adventure, societal norms, and the quest for identity, particularly that of the Sea Lady as she attempts to integrate into human society and possibly gain a soul.

Herbert George Wells ( Sep. 21, 1866 –Aug. 13, 1946) is often called the “father of science fiction,” and is known for his influential novels like
The Time Machine and
The War of the Worlds. He was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, exploring themes of futurism, social commentary, and scientific advancement, and he is credited with envisioning or predicting concepts such as time travel, alien invasions, and even the internet.
Some of his early novels, called “scientific romances,” invented several themes now classic in science fiction in such works as
The Time Machine,
The Island of Doctor Moreau,
The Invisible Man,
The War of the Worlds,
When the Sleeper Wakes, and
The First Men in the Moon. He also wrote realistic novels that received critical acclaim, and dozens of short stories and novellas.
