There are so many great fantasty books out there it's difficult to recommend just one, but every time someone asks me to do that, I immediately blurt out "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance. I don't know why. It's not my favorite fantasy book. I don't reread it as often as some other fantasy books. I don't know it as well as other fantasy books. Yet, invariably, it is the first book that comes to mind when someone asks me for a fantasy recommendation.
