Hey folks,
I've been following along kindlemodding.org's guide for jailbreaking and installing KOReader, Screensaver mod, etc. I have a pretty common Kindle, the Paperwhite 7th Generation, also known as PW3. I went ahead with WinterBreak, and after a little troubleshooting with the hotfix, I got my Kindle jailbroken.
Then I started getting MRPI and KUAL installed. I installed MRPI, then downloaded and installed KUAL (Coplate). When I entered ";log mrpi" into my Kindle's search box, it hung for a second, then crashed, creating a new book called "KPPMainAppV2_5604_002-juno_16020101_muscat_wario-409747_crash_Sep_26_12.40.23_2025.sdr". This "crash log" isn't very helpful, most of it isn't even human-readable, so it's been hard to tell what exactly is going wrong.
I have been combing forums, trying various things:
- Several different versions of KUAL, they all resulted in the same behavior:
- Update_KUALBooklet_hotfix_f190a38_install.bin
- Update_KUALBooklet_hotfix_v2.7.37_install.bin
- Update_KUALBooklet_hotfix_c6ac782_install.bin
- Update_KUALBooklet_HDRepack.bin
- One thread mentioned that some keystore or something got updated in early 2025, and said I should try installing the new keystore using mrpi. I did this, using "Update_mkk-20250419-k5-ALL_keystore-install.bin". It didn't work, silently crashing. After restarting my kindle and trying again, it actually worked. I saw the "hush little baby..." text and it completed the installation. I tried installing KUAL immediately afterwards and it produced a new error log book.
- I have tried installing the .bin files manually by placing them in the root directory of my kindle and using the "update" feature. This does not work, my Kindle immediately deletes any .bin that it doesn't like, including all of the files I have tried using to install KUAL.
I'm getting a bit frustrated now, and figured I'd ask people who know better than I do. Are there any current known issues with jailbreaking and using MRPI on the PW3 Kindle? What should I try doing next? I figure my next steps probably include a factory reset and starting over, in which case, is kindlemodding.org up to date? Or are there alternative KUAL/MRPI versions that I should use for my hardware instead?
Thank you so much for your help
