Firmware 5,18.5 has measures in place for the newer DRM for KFX. That's your problem. What you should have bought is an older Kindle that at least handles KF8 but will not get the 5.18.5 firmware.

You are not out of luck as far as using your Kindle to remove DRM from your eBooks. The other solution is to buy from Kobo and forget Kindle sells eBooks.
