So, to continue the story: I asked the client if they really want mobi, explained briefly problems that come with it. The answer is yes, please give me mobi, because "it's a standard after all"... On the other hand, where I live (Poland) online stores usually offer two formats - epub and mobi. I don't think it is going away any time soon...
