I would add MapleRead to your list of alternative reading apps, it has a fabulous interface and it integrates directly with Calibre to download books directly from the Calibre web server if you set it up.
I find I actually prefer MR to Kindle for iPad now that I have MR customized the way I like it. I only use the Kindle app for my Kindle Unlimited books now, everything else I source from other vendors and load into MR via Calibre.
