We know that Amazon has the ability, and uses it, to delete books from people's Kindles and even to delete their Amazon account entirely. Your books are gone in that case (unless you have backed them up and removed DRM and permanently put your Kindle into Airplane Mode). People will say that Amazon doesn't close accounts unless you do something awful. It appears that buying a lot of dog food to donate is awful enough to trigger account deletion, if you believe the post quoted above.

I'm not saying that you should backup your books. I'm just pointing out that there are some scenarios where you might wish that you had. If you're OK with that small risk, no problem. Just be aware that it exists.
I fully understand your point of view, but beyond our personal stance on this or that misfortune, I believe that people are guided more by criteria of normality than of exceptionality. And I think that's quite logical. The normal thing is that tomorrow you and I and everyone else on this forum will be able to access our Amazon account or any other bookshop and download our books without any major problems. And the day after tomorrow will be the same, and the day after that too. This is the norm. If people perceived otherwise, they would surely stop shopping there or take additional measures. But they do not consider it necessary because it is not the norm. Human relationships are based on criteria of trust, not mistrust. You put your money in the bank trusting that you will be able to withdraw it tomorrow, you drive your car trusting that no one will invade your lane. And it may happen that this is not the case, but you don't go through life anticipating every possible danger. You take tolerable risks based on what is normal in your environment. And what is normal in the world of e-readers is that you can access your account at any time and download the books you have purchased. That is why some of us are not particularly concerned about this issue. It's not that we are reckless compared to others who know what can happen if you don't do this or that, such as backing up your books, turning off WiFi or loading your books via USB. We simply live our lives differently.
